Attention Seeking

Barking for attention

Barking occur to obtain your attention. Your dog will bark in your presence. If he asks for attention, your dog will generally bark while you are busy, for example while your are watching TV, answering the phone or the door. Variations are possible.

Barking out of frustration

This type of barking is similar to a call for attention. It may occur when your dog is prevented to do something. He could, for example, bark at an object out of reach, or at a dog who doesn't want to play. Do not try to distract him by play, food or attention and don't punish him.

This positive attention will also encourage the barking. Whether your dogs barks for attention or out of frustration, the procedure will basically be the same.

1- Use the command "Stop" each time he will receive the spray.

2- Once he received the citronella spray, use a command as Come - Down - Stay and/or lead your dog towards a toy.

3- Reward your dog as soon as he stops barking. The waiting period between the spray and the reward must be increased slowly and gradually.

4- Verify your dog's behaviour without the collar as soon as the problem seems to be under control while he wears the device. Put the collar back on as needed if your dog fails to obey the command "Stop".

Each member of your family must adhere to these principles.

Your dog should receive attention only when he is calm and not when he asks for it.
Show attention to your dog when he does not ask for it.

Furthermore, we recommend that you provide frequent physical exercise for your dog and perfect his training by consulting a professional trainer, or the chapter on basic training in our Spray Commander manual (another excellent product of MULTIVET)
